The Prospect of Leaving a Job

By Matt - Thursday, November 9th, 2006

I’m at a bit of a strange crossroads in that I am trying to change jobs, I have a potential job lined up but I’m also ready to just leave with or without a job. I’m not going to go into the details behind why since that’s a totally different topic. But the prospect of leaving a job has some very big financial implications. If you are prepared and have some money set aside then leaving a job is merely a matter of giving notice. But I’m not quite in that situation; the mental state that I’m in is simply not worth the money.

The good thing is I do have a potential job lined up and if it plays out I’m going to have to only deal with the drop in salary. Yes, I’m considering taking a job that pays me less money than I am making now. Most people would look at me a bit funny since you’re supposed to make more money as your career moves on. But in this situation I’m going to save on car expenses since I would have no drive in the new position. The savings in wear to the car, gas costs, and repair and maintenance costs could come close to about 7-8k which goes a long way to cover the difference in salary. The second thing is the peace of mind and actually enjoying the job; for me those are very valuable and that in and of itself would cover the remainder. But this new job would also provide me with extremely valuable experience which makes the cut worth it.

So would you take a cut in salary to lower your expenses and provide yourself with an opportunity for future growth?

I think taking a job that will make you happier is worth it, even if there can be a drop in income. I recently took a job that I expected to pay a lot less (after some bargaining the only true losses were in the benefits area and aren’t too huge), that will cost me more for commuting, and I ended up having to move about 20 miles. But it has all been worth it because I enjoy it a lot more and I’m happier overall.
