Kitchen Renovations

June 14th, 2009

Over the past month our house has been in a state of chaos – for the most part we tried to keep it controlled but there were a few times it was just pure chaos. We decided a few months ago to renovate the kitchen. The decision was more out of necessity than anything else; with the little one now eating solids we are producing a lot more dishes and for that matter food. The old kitchen was a disaster with the original construction done back in the 40′s.

The kitchen is also the reason that I have been mostly silent since we started the work. I decided to be the general contractor on this project as well as the homeowner getting the work done. I have to say that by doing this we probably saved a few thousand dollars. Unfortunately it also meant that I was doing a lot of the unskilled labor to save costs.

The net result:

  • We have a real kitchen again
  • We have about twice the storage and counter space
  • We have a dishwasher
  • Most importantly we increased the value of the house

This one project has cost us approximately $15,000-$17,000 but the increase in the value of our home is around $25-30,000. Although a great deal of effort went into the kitchen we also kept in mind the resale value of the house so there were no crazy designs or ideas – just functional additions.

I am glad that this project is now done – all that’s left now is moving things back into the kitchen which shouldn’t take away from my blogging anymore.
